Dr. Murabit is a medical doctor, one of 17 Global Sustainable Development Goal Advocates appointed by the UN Secretary General, and the youngest UN High-Level Commissioner on Health Employment & Economic Growth. Amina Mohamed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations said of Dr. Murabit “[she] brings energy, passion, and a fierce commitment to building an equal, just, and peaceful world to her role as an SDG Advocate. Her bold leadership is inspirational; she is at the forefront of the next generation believing in and creating a better future.”
Dr. Murabit views challenges through a unique lens; she’s shaped national and global security, health, education and economic policies which impact billions. She serves as a board member for The Malala Fund, International Alert, Malaria No More and Women’s March Global, and is a respected thought leader on how female empowerment and inclusion lies at the heart of the solutions for a sustainable, peaceful and prosperous world.
My Story
Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, as the sixth of eleven children, Dr. Murabit credits her parents for shaping her views on leadership and gender equality.
At 15, Murabit moved to Zawiya, Libya, to study medicine at Al Zawiya University, marking the start of her journey in healthcare amid a complex social and political landscape.
During the Libyan Civil War, while still a medical student, she founded Voice of Libyan Women to promote inclusive security and women's rights, launching the impactful Noor Campaign.
Murabit graduated with a Doctor of Medicine and became a certified sexual and gender-based violence investigator for the International Criminal Court.
She was named an Ashoka Fellow and appointed to the UN 1325 Advisory Board to support women, peace, and security efforts globally.
Murabit’s TED Talk on inclusive security gained global recognition, and she spoke before the UN Security Council on the anniversary of Resolution 1325.
She earned her master's from LSE and was appointed by the UN Secretary-General as a Sustainable Development Goals Advocate and High-Level Commissioner on Health, Employment & Economic Growth.
Murabit co-founded The NewNow, a coalition of emerging global leaders, and launched the Emerging Leaders Lab to empower women peacebuilders and social entrepreneurs worldwide.
Named a Radcliffe Fellow, she focused on inclusive peacebuilding and global security frameworks during her fellowship at Harvard University’s Radcliffe Institute.
